With Mullvad recently removing port forwarding from their capabilities, many are on the search for a new VPN. What is Burggit’s favorite VPN?
I roll my own using a VPS in a different country that has a policy that shits on DMCA. Since all I need is to evade copyright letters when torrenting. If you need the utmost privacy, go with Mullvad or IVPN. Both do not have an account tied to anything and they don’t save payment info. They also accept crypto if you’re into that too. No port forwarding sucks, but I don’t really bother with it on my VPS and still can torrent.
Don’t know about ProtonVPN’s policies, but AirVPN, I’m pretty sure lets you torrent without getting hit with copyright notices. But the former two I mentioned above are the absolute gold standard if you want privacy. Do keep in mind you’ll also need to use a browser that conceals your fingerprint too. That’s almost just as, if not, more important than just getting a VPN and connecting to it. Librewolf is what I tend to go with because it has a hardened user.js out of the box so that you don’t need to keep up with changes upstream from Firefox as far as Mozilla killing/changing features go.

Doesn’t hosting your own personal VPN for that purpose also eliminate most plausible deniability as well? If you can know there’s only a single user browsing on a given IP address that makes correlation attacks a lot easier IMO.
That’s definitely fair, but the host I’m using says that they don’t obey DMCA takedown notices right on their front page and anyone hosting anything somewhat sketchy recommends them on lowendbox. They’re based in Moldova, a former Soviet country. So they really have no reason to cooperate with feds.
I figure I’m not high up on anyone’s list since torrent swarms are full of IP addresses and any law firm would rather go after anyone based in the US rather than get some federal officials to do an international subpoena for just one guy.
I’d guess correlation attacks rise above your average IP holder’s (and their attack dogs’) level of influence honestly. Would require cooperation with big tech to get a correlation and bank on you actually using big tech sites with personally identifiable information.
Yeah, I’m not doing anything super illegal like unauthorized pentesting. Or doing nmap scans of random servers without other’s permission. Just merely downloading movies, TV shows, and anime.
I’ve always come to use Mullvad when I want to torrent (I used to seed JAVs, VR ones especially since they’re very rare back then) but I do them within my Mullvad subscription period, usually a month a few times a year.
So when I came to use burggit, I paid to them for a full year and just learned the news about them disabling port forwarding and I regret not researching more lmao. Yes, I am not seeding right now but I thought I can do it again within the year if I ever want to.
I use protonvpn free tier and just subscribe for a month when I go on vacation or out of country.

and my favorite of them all, has great core servers, secure servers (tor relayed etc), and my favorite is torrenting/p2p servers. I also use their mail server. The only thing i don’t use is their cloud drive and calendar (as i host my own).
When it comes to just any VPN, i also host my own so i can access my stuff from outside.
heard PIA is also good, mullvad would be my second choice if i wasn’t on protonvpn.
I have heard good things about AirVPN, ProtonVPN (noting that currently does not have port forwarding on Linux systems), and Windscribe. Does anyone have input on these?
I currently use Mullvad and consider it to basically be the VPN to get for privacy, however i’ve heard decent things about AzireVPN.
