Title. I’m honestly hoping that I can eventually sunset this instance if everyone enjoys it more. I genuinely enjoy using it.

There’s more variety of content there from a vast sea of instances versus here where it’s only a few cliquey instances controlling who gets to have a voice on the Lemmyverse. This Lemmy instance is much harder to maintain due to the fact that I can’t tell what images get uploaded here, which means anyone can use this as a free image host for illegal shit, and the fact that there’s no user list that I can easily see. Moderation tools are nonexistent on here. It also eats up storage like crazy due to the fact that it rapidly caches images from scraped URLs and the few remaining instances that we still federate with. The software is downright frustrating to work with, and It feels less rewarding overall putting effort into this instance because it feels like we’re so isolated. I’m going to be honest, when I put this instance back up, I felt a sense of dread when doing so.

Federation is pretty much broken from Lemmy to Mastodon/Misskey/Pleroma and their respective forks. So all we can get is this watered down content from the Lemmyverse from the few instances that still haven’t figured out our existence, as well as the ensuing defederation that will surely follow once they’ve found out about us.

So I’d like to get your guys’ opinion on this. Which software do you prefer? Sharkey or Lemmy?

Honestly, I never understood what the sharkey instance was even supposed to be. It looked extremely counter-intuitive to me. No idea what I was even supposed to do there,

To me Sharkey and Lemmy serve wildly different purposes, so I don’t think they’re really directly comparable.

Regarding the Sharkey instance, there isn’t really anything there I want to post and there aren’t many people there I want to follow, so it’s hard for me to find much of a use for it.

I’ve been testing out sharkey and tbh, I don’t like it. I always thought it was gonna be a stopgap before the instance come back up, also I’m not really a fan of the web ui, and it’s been very hard to find a iOS app that is compatible with it because of the confusion mastodon-but-it-isn’t nature of the whole thing

With what is posted, splitting the content up even more isn’t useful, specially coz there’s a lot of empty communities

I just signed up there and I don’t really see myself visiting the Sharkey instance nearly as much. At the end of the day I’m just here to see loli pics that people share, and the communities here allow me to separate that from everything I don’t care about. I don’t know why I’d ever use the Sharkey instance rather than just use Aethy or Baraag, especially since I’m already following users I want to see stuff from on Aethy.

Tbh, give me a good sharkey app and i migrate instantly, the web interface is bugged and counter intuitive for me for some reason :/ I’ve blocked 3/4 of lemmy and the most stuff that gets to me is reddit reposts now. Especially the people from .ml and .World instances are mentally disabled its somehow worse than reddit was. (never going back there however)

Even my other like 20 accounts went mostly silent even though i have some more time now…

Any app that supports the Mastodon API is compatible with Sharkey. So apps like Husky, and Fedilab will work with it. You can also click More > switch ui on the webui for alternate layouts that you can try.

Hey, is it possible to externally link images like here with something like ![]() ? I cant find a way

Not sure about that. I’d just right click -> copy image and paste it into your post and link the source.

Seems to not work on mobile (even with mouse, yes i have a mouse for my phone) i think i just need to upload them directly 16mb isn’t bad i don’t think i will exceed that with most images.

Hmm… Hard to say. I’d hate to make anyone feel dread to keep this instance running. But I’ve dreamed for years of a loli-friendly site that functions just like Reddit.

I just signed up for Sharkey, and it’s pretty neat. Still feels like I have a lot to learn about it, though, and about federation in general.

I’m open to either one, as long as I’m sure it’ll be around for a while. That’s probably most important to me…

Ngl I barely use lemmy anymore. It’s the same reddit faggotry but powermods have more control. I’m more interested in this other instance.

I feel the exact same way. I hardly use Lemmy anymore. It consists of the same tired ragebait articles on the front page of each instance. As well as the same familiar Reddit style of moderation where “Anyone who doesn’t agree with me gets permabanned.”

Feel like its a lot easier to have an archive of posts on Lemmy. Also, actual discussion. Maybe not as convenient for a quick jerk off but great if I want to actually find something specific later.

I agree that the general Lemmy community is pretty bad and it makes browsing All pretty bad. Comes down to Lemmy devs being communists I think.

I am unfamiliar with sharkey. I value this instance because it is literally the only loli friendly lemmy instance that I know of, and I think there needs to be a space for that on lemmy.

But if sharkey is a better use experience and has better content I could change my mind. Are there open source phone apps for browsing sharkey?

Anything compatible with Mastodon will work with Sharkey. There’s Husky, Fedilab, Milktea to name a few.

I had never used Sharkey before today. I just created an account on the Sharkey instance and I don’t really know how to use it. If I’m correct in assuming Sharkey is similar to Mastodon, I don’t know if I’d use it much. I know I don’t post or comment very often on Burggit but I’ve always felt that the “Reddit” style social media sites like Lemmy work better for discussions and it seems like people are more likely to not just see but also respond to your posts.

The Sharkey instance and it’s not even close. It has about 4 big issues I can think of at the moment, but other than that it’s great! I like the playfulness of the interface too, with all the animations and sound effects. it feels fun. I don’t know how Sharkey compares to other similar software that’s popular like Akkoma though.

I do prefer Sharkey but at the same time, I like having a Reddit forum alternative for posts but none of them support loli/shota posting which sucks.

It’s not 1:1 to traditional forums like Lemmy/Reddit, but there’s channels for which you can group posts following a specific topic. I wish this feature was more at the forefront, imo. You access it by going to More -> Channels

From a content UI perspective I guess this is why I would lean in preference towards Lemmy. It’s pretty quick to figure out how to locate and browse similar content.

That said I will be up front about not having dived deeply into Sharkey to figure out all the potential that’s there to make it do things in a way I’d prefer. Though perhaps that’s a point against it as well, since it may take more work to get it functioning like that.
