I can reach other lemmy instances like lemmy.fmhy.ml
by federating I mean like: searching for a post in their search bar and have it pop up (and the other way around)

Federation with non-lemmy instances is kind of an on and off feature in Lemmy, it seems to break frequently. Unfortunately there’s not much we can do about this issue.
